JoyMcDonellJewellery is your Etsy shop for wearable art with metal and stones.

I live and work in Ottawa, Ontario. My pursuit as a nature photographer took a surprising turn when I became fascinated with rocks — their forms, colours and patterns.

I subsequently joined the Ottawa Lapsmith and Mineral Club, and learned to cut and polish stones. I enjoy my role as one of the supervisors on lapidary days at the shop. My interest in minerals prompted me to learn how to combine metal with stones to make jewellery. These days it is as much about the metal as it is about the stones. Luckily, there is no need to choose: my studio is my playground! Nothing is more fun — or sometimes more challenging — than a few hours spent heating, hammering, bending and shaping sterling silver and copper, or creating a setting for an awesome piece of nature's artistry in the form of an opal, agate, or turquoise.

My venture into Etsy selling is sparked by a need to showcase my work during Covid times. Like many other artists, showing and selling at craft shows is no longer an option for the foreseeable future.

I have studied with several inspiring teachers, among them Karl Schutt, Betty Helen Longhi, John Cogswell, Fabrizio Acquafresca, and Marilynn Nicholson.

I came to jewellery making as a result of my background as a nature photographer. I realized I loved rocks, then learned to cut them, and eventually combine them with metal to make jewellery. Some lapidary work is mine, and some is by other cutters.
