Meet the Right Side of My Brain
Welcome to Just Smaller, the fruits of my labor from exercising the right side of my brain for the last year.
Why would a left side of the brain accountant, by occupation, shake off the creative right side of the brain's cob webs all of a sudden? Well, a partially built & neglected dollhouse I started 15 years ago and had given to my now adult daughter to finish, found its way back in my life, unchanged, saving it from more years of neglect and storage or worse the curb. I opted for the curb, as I live in a small apartment and space management is challenging. But, my daughter insisted I take it and hold onto it until she could eventually take it back. I am eternally grateful she did.
FROM DOLLHOUSE TO MINIATURE MAKING -
Renovating and decorating the dollhouse became a cathartic and bonding experience for my daughter and me. I wanted to recreate/recapture a realistic legacy/time capsule of the pre-divorce childhood home she once had. I wanted Abby to be able to reflect back at the warmth of the home my ex - husband and I provided and to be able to share this with her children someday. But there was one problem, I couldn't find miniature furniture/décor/feel that evoked the feelings of our sense of home. I couldn't find anything that reflected the home she grew up in. This is what led me to the making my own miniatures and ultimately to "Just Smaller," furniture for the home, made just smaller. I began creating pieces that reflect the environment that I would want to live in and convey my personality.
For the past year, the right side of my brain has gotten quite the work out. I've immersed myself in wood, paint, glue and other messy partners in crime. My once small apartment, efficiently furnished, has become a makeshift shop/studio and cluttered with containers of supplies. My once beige carpeting now unintentionally looks like a Jackson Pollack knock off, my once weekly manicured nails have taken a backseat to remnants of stain, paint and crazy glue I couldn't scrub off without peeling off my skin. My once weekly regimen of walking on the treadmill has been replaced by exercising the right side of my brain and working out my creative juices, trading in a once fit body for sag and a muffin top that once actually got crazy glued together while working on a piece. I love making miniatures. I love the process, the mess, the smell of supplies. But, mostly, I love the look on Abby's face when I share a new miniature piece with her.
The right side of my brain thanks you for visiting my site and hope it brings you a smile scrolling through.
Enjoy,
Heidi
