I have been a photographer for well over 50 years, getting my first camera in 1972 and spending a good chunk of high school in the darkroom. I grew up in New Jersey, only twenty miles from New York City. But it was not city life, as we had 20 acres literally inside the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, inspiring a lifelong interest in birds and the natural world.
After several years in Maine for college, work (and marriage!), we moved to Tulsa in 1982, where we raised our two sons. I am past president of the Tulsa Audubon Society and active in other conservation groups. In 2009 I decided to turn my hobby into a profession and began participating in art shows and marketing my work.
My images are from the natural and human worlds, evoking an emotional response from the viewer, from a sense of awe viewing a grand landscape to a wave of nostalgia viewing a vintage steam train.
I display unique grand and more personal landscapes, as well as original photos of meticulously recreated historical scenes (not colorized vintage images) with authentic period props & reenactors. My images are printed on archival aluminum, acrylic or canvas, many in custom frames. My goal is always to present the scene as I saw it and experienced it. I want it to evoke an emotional response in the viewer, from a sense of awe viewing a grand vista, to a wave of nostalgia viewing an old, rusty truck. When someone stands in front of one of my large prints and just stares into it, placing themselves in the scene, then I know I have succeeded!
While I have tens of thousands of slides, I now use digital equipment, and over 99% of the images I now display are digital. For the photography gearheads, I use Sony mirrorless full-Frame cameras (A7RV), but other systems are just as good.
Photography has always been a technological art form (which keeps improving with each new advance), but the technology is simply a tool. The creative aspects, such as composition and lighting, are the same for film or digital and are the most important aspects of creating a final image that will have an impact on the viewer.
There is no such thing as an unmanipulated photographic print, either from film or digital. No camera can see like the human eye, so photographs must be edited to reproduce the scene as one saw it and experienced it. So I now make full use of my expertise with imaging software instead of my expertise in the darkroom. Though a legitimate artistic method, in my work I never “create” an image that did not exist in nature. In other words, while I certainly use Photoshop, I never “photoshop” an image.
