About

Beautiful and diverse in nature, color is a part of who I am, - I bring it into my art, both in felting and silk painting.

Lorell Maldoon, Fiber Artist

Distinct colors are blended within each individual piece incorporating wool, silk, yarns, bamboo, cheesecloth, and other varied materials into one-of-a-kind wearable and non-wearable items. Wet felting techniques result in nuno felted scarves of fabric, wool and organic materials. 2D and 3D methods become wall hangings and vessels. Silk paintings begin with white and are then painted abstractly using steam set dyes.

I was hooked after my first felting class. Wet felting flower-making followed and I continue to learn new processes and techniques. The variety and creative freedom I find as a felt maker is unlimited. Silk painting began when an acquaintance was letting go of French silk dyes and a book. Starting with this book and some classes, I began using the steam set dyes. The way the vibrant colored silk dyes flow and interact with luxurious silk fabrics is always rewarding.

Sharing my work with customers at shows and viewing their delight at seeing my work for the first time is gratifying. I love knowing patrons will be living with one of my pieces as part of their lives, long after a show is over.

Crafts have always been a passion of mine. I was a young girl when Grandma taught me cross stitch on pillowcases. Over the years, I have hopped in and out of embroidery & crewel, sewing, counted cross stitch, needlepoint, latch hook rugs, knitting, crocheting, jewelry making and most recently silk painting and felting. After raising two sons in Southern California and working in aerospace for over 30 years, I am now finally able to devote myself to my first love, using my hands and my heart to create lasting beauty. I hope you will visit me in my studio in Grass Valley, California.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nuno Felting?
Nuno felting is a a combination of wool and fabric. Small amounts of wool are layered on a fabric, usually silk or cotton with an open weave. The felting process involves water, soap and agitation to allow the wool fibers to migrate through the fabric and entangle while pulling the cloth along with them as they shrink. This causes the fabric to gather in all directions, producing interesting textured effects.

Care for Nuno Felted Items:
Hand wash in cool water using mild liquid soap, don’t agitate. Roll in a towel to remove excess water. Lay out flat to dry.

Care for Hand Painted Silks
Hand wash in cool water using mild liquid soap. Roll in a towel to remove excess water. Iron on the back side of the scarf using silk setting.
