Art, Science, Nature, Form and Color
I’m an English/Iranian/American studio artist, writer, filmmaker and educational technologist. I was raised in a home filled with people of all backgrounds, in one of the oldest African American communities in the North. Growing up in a diverse creative environment breeds love for making and appreciating art. In turn, it's fun to encourage other people to participate in art and creativity, which I believe is the birthright of all.
Studio time is evenly divided between ceramics, photography, painting and jewelry design and fabrication. When I paint, I like the meditative distraction of music, a movie, talking on the phone. When working in the clay studio, I love consulting with my colleagues, and getting lost in technique, surrounded by people. Making wheel-thrown and hand-built stoneware pieces in a collaborative studio focused on systematic learning suits me very well. I'm a bead hoarder and utilize finds I have collected from five continents in my jewelry. And, every day of my life, I take at least one photo.
When I am not actually making things, I spend a lot of time looking at art of all kinds. Science, color, art, math, music, architecture, nature, design, patterns and particular people are all important influences on my art, as are pieces of Persian, English and African American cultures. My process combines purposeful planning, as well as a flexible mindset of learning when things take an unexpected technical or aesthetic turn.
My ceramic work, paintings, jewelry and photographs have been exhibited in the US and Middle East, and reside in collections in America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. More of my work in various media lives here:
