Experimenting with traditional needlework, collecting materials from friends and family, using items that are mechanisms of remembering and reviving things that are hidden away, and playing with colors, geometric patterns and textures in nature, are all part of my work.
My mother is an avid seamstress and knitter, who made the entire family clothing, and taught us multiple forms of needlework. After moving to Miami in 1999, I started quilting and sewing to express myself artistically. My pieces are influenced by and pay homage to the geometric and story telling qualities of Americana quilts and how they can pass down skills and stories in families, from generation to generation.
The installation pieces are for people to immerse themselves in and interact with, whether walking under and through, or they are invited to take pieces of the installation, I try to change how people view objects by seeing them in new perspectives. My inspirations and the materials chosen come from family values and heritage, and geometric patterns in the natural world.
One of the common themes across all of my work is that it is all pattern driven. The definition of quilt is to stitch, sew, and design with one’s own two hands. My work tries to translate the movement of color and design, combining ideas from the traditional art of quilting and contemporary art into my own personal geometric, organic, three-dimensional work.
