(Accidental) Doll Maker
While browsing through the bookstore several years ago, I came across a book on making dolls. I had always loved trying new crafts but sewing was new to me. I thought I would give it a try and that my daughter would be happy to get some new (if slightly misshapen) playmates. I made several attempts at doll making, trying out different techniques and materials. Once I got the hang of the basics, I had so much fun designing new outfits and styles that I decided to make each of my three children a special gift for Christmas that year. I used what I had learned in that book and what I learned through my own trial and error to make them their own unique superhero dolls.
The superheroes were a big hit and the kids carried them everywhere. My design has changed some since then but the basic idea has remained the same. I clearly remember the joy on the kids' faces as they realized that not only did they each get their own one of a kind doll, but that the doll was actually them. They held a tiny superhero version of themselves.
I may have (accidentally) stumbled into this art but its something I truly love. It allows me to be creative while making gifts for children all over the country. I like to imagine that each child who opens their own Little Gray Bird Studio doll has the same sense of wonder and joy that my children had all those years ago on that Christmas morning. I can think of no better inspiration to keep working and keep coming up with new ideas.
