Lucent Jane - Art with Heart and a Touch of Chaos
Hi, I’m Melissa — the artist, maker, and high school art teacher behind Lucent Jane.
By day, I teach teenagers how to draw, paint, experiment, and trust their creativity.
By night (and pretty much any other spare moment), I create art that brings color, texture, and a little bit of beautiful chaos into everyday homes.
I work in several handmade mediums, each one feeding the next:
• Hand-carved linoleum prints
Every print begins as a block carved by hand — no shortcuts, just me, my tools, and a lot of coffee. I love the imperfect lines, the tactile texture, and the quiet rhythm of carving something that will become part of someone’s home.
• Hand-painted textured bottles
Each bottle is painted one at a time using raised, dimensional textures and rich, retro-inspired color palettes. They work beautifully as functional pieces (olive oil, simple syrup, dish soap, liquor) or simply as art. Every bottle is its own little sculpture.
• Glazed ceramics
I also create and glaze ceramics, letting color, texture, and organic forms guide the process. Ceramics give me a grounding, earthy counterbalance to the precision of carving.
• Acrylic paintings
When I need a burst of expressive freedom, I turn to acrylics — bold color, layered brushstrokes, and intuitive mark-making. These pieces let me explore themes of women, nature, movement, and emotion in a more fluid medium.
Whether I’m carving, painting, or glazing, my approach is the same:
art should feel joyful, imperfect, and a little chaotic in the best way.
As a high school art teacher, I spend my days encouraging young artists to take risks, embrace mistakes, and find their creative voice — and those lessons show up in my own studio practice. My work is about celebrating the handmade, loving the imperfections, and letting color and texture do the talking.
Everything in my shop is made by hand in Las Vegas, signed by me, and created with intention, curiosity, and heart.
