My name - Lucy - means "bringer of light" - and this idea, of carrying light, is a recurring theme in my work.
My process starts with building and stretching my canvases; I enjoy the connection with every stage of creating my work
Take the time to handwrite letters; putting those words down within a beautiful card, carries a visual message too...

fox gloves and the dark woods...

As a very small child (I was one of those accidental later children, so went largely unnoticed and unfettered about my way) I wandered alone in the dark part of the woods, past where the foxgloves grew, under the rooks' nests. I imagined I was in a magical hidden world, where I could commune with animals and birds and trees. My memories of those solitary walks are visceral and vivid; the dark foliage, the pink foxgloves, the moss underfoot, the feeling of mystery and possibility...
A little further on (at the grand old age of 6 by this time), I started writing and illustrating my own stories about animals and declared that I wanted to be a children's book illustrator. However, in the interim, I became confused - one part of me wanted to rebel against expectations that my becoming an artist was inevitable; another part wanted to impress my Daddy, who didn't want an artist daughter, so I chose science subjects, and then kept my promise to him and went to university, not art college, and I did an academic degree. I was still confused. I didn't really want all that - the little girl who had known so clearly so long ago what she wanted to be, struggled to emerge, and it was messy for a while. Then I ran away to Barcelona, where some of my favourite artists had come from, and there I started over, found my dream attic studio, and set about making painting my living.

I now live back in my native Scotland, which makes sense, as I am reconnected with the dark woods and fox gloves, and sights and smells and myths that always fed my imagination. I had been earning my living exclusively from selling original paintings for about a decade, but three years ago now, I finally got round to having some cards made up with my images on them, and some limited edition prints too, and I opened my etsy shop, without any great expectations or much of a clue as to how to go about things. The first year etsy was something that was vaguely going on in the background, I made a few sales but didn't really give it much of my time or energy, as I was as focussed on my painting as usual. However, the following year I took some time to look at how to make it work for me, and we've been getting along very well since then! I now have many more cards and prints to choose from, and also the beginnings of a stationery line, with some gorgeous A5 notebooks added just last month...different sized notebooks and sketchbooks will be coming soon.

The support and inspiration on etsy is phenomenal; the process of growing my little shop, so empowering. Having my products on etsy has enabled me to get my work out to a much wider audience, in a range of prices so that anyone and everyone can afford art in their lives. Creating my own brand (not something that comes naturally to me, as an artist I'm pretty much averse to words like 'branding' and 'revenue streams') has allowed me to make a much more stable income from my art, meaning that the process of creating new work does not have to be so fraught with fear-of-not-selling-enough, and hence that I can actually take more pride and pleasure in my work.
