About

If you can't find it, make it!

I started StoneMetal Design in 2011 because I just could not find a lot of jewelry that had an "outdoorsy" flair. Also, as a rock climber, I thought it would be neat to have a necklace made from retired climbing gear, but again, I could not locate one. So, I decided to design and make them myself, hence StoneMetal Design was born.

One thing I wanted to achieve with my rock climbing jewelry was that I wanted it to look like real jewelry - not just a piece of gear hanging on a string. I discovered Kumihimo braiding, which looks very much like a climbing rope, and can be created using satin cords that come in a variety of colors, allowing me to create beautiful color combinations.

I then took courses in wire wrapping so I could create attractive wire bails to attach the piece of gear to the necklace. The result is a stunning piece of jewelry that can be worn climbing or a night on the town.

I truly enjoy making bracelets and necklaces made from natural materials - leather, gemstones, metal - that have an outdoorsy flair. I am constantly taking courses to improve my technique and learn new skills. I can customize any of my jewelry, all you have to do is ask!

The outdoors is my passion and inspires all of my work. I have been a rock/ice climber for 15 years and a hiker/backpacker since I could walk. I will be hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2013.

Welcome to my shop! The outdoors is my passion and I have been climbing for 15 years and am an avid hiker and backpacker. I wanted to create jewelry that is inspired from the outdoors and especially from climbing, which has been a very big part of my life. I thought it would be neat to incorporate retired climbing gear into pretty pieces of jewelry and I paired it with Kumihimo braiding - which looks similar to a climbing rope - and voila! Jewelry for climbers!

CUSTOM ORDERS

Perhaps you have a special stopper or cam that you have taken on many adventures and it is time to retire it. I can turn that stopper or cam (please note that cams will be taken apart and the lobes will be used) into unique pieces necklaces for women and men. You can choose the colors for the Kumihimo braid and either sterling silver, silver plated, silver filled, or 14-kt gold for the clasps and bail. Custom orders take a bit more time as I may need to order materials for it plus, depending upon the materials required, may cost a bit more and require a 20 percent up-front deposit. Please contact me if you have questions or special requests and we can work together to design your custom necklace.
