Inception Of MagicSimSim
Growing up in the 90’s art and music filled state of Bengal, I was fed on a daily diet of fantasy legends and magical folklore. This world was filled with the rich hues of imagination as my grandmother would lull me to sleep with half forgotten tales of ancient Gods and their epics.... the words painting a rich imagery of transcendentally beautiful cosmic energies, noble and heroic beings and the sheer love, beauty, and generosity of human nature.
I started my own version of retelling these stories via pencil scribbles and crayon drawings on the back pages of notebooks ......winged Jatayu frantically trying to rescue captured Sita, Garuda triumphantly winning Amrit or the Nectar of Gods, the celestial swans in Nala Damayanti’s epic love story and many more.... all drawn with the single-minded vigor (and expertise!) of a 10-year-old. The love for mythology grew stronger with each passing year as I devoured stories from not only the ancient epics of India, but added Greek, Norse, Celtic, Aztec legends to my ever-expanding mental library.
College life in the illustrious National Institute of Fashion Technology (New Delhi, class of 2003), whetted my appetite for folklore as I documented forgotten crafts and story telling rituals in some of the culturally richest corners of India... including Nathdwara in Rajasthan, Kangra and Chamba Valley in Himachal, Sriperumbudur in Andhra Pradesh to name a few. And this is where I discovered another great love of my life.... the fabulous tradition of hand embroidery. The sheer intricacy and richness of Indian hand embroidery dates back a few thousand years and is unmatched across the world! Especially in modern times when fast fashion and 15 second social media rule virtually, I fall a bit more in love every single day with the timeless, ageless splendor of a skill that takes years and years to acquire and results in creating something so achingly beautiful, that it brings a lump in one’s throat.
The concept of amalgamating the two was the most natural progression .... the child-like love and awe of the legends merge seamlessly with years of detailed research and technical skill acquired over the years.
Magicsimsim comes from the ancient Talmudic expression “šem-šamáįm” meaning “In the name of Heaven” and coincidentally happens to be an alliteration of my name. It is also who I am, what I dream, where I’m from, who I love, whom I’ve lost, what I’ve seen, and what I, one day, might become.
