About

Finding Magic in Stones

Stones have always spoken to me. I started collecting rocks when I was a kid and to this day I can not walk down a dirt road without staring at the ground searching for that hidden treasure. My love of rocks over the years evolved into the lapidary arts. First I got a tumbler and polished stones, then a vintage rock saw to see what was inside of stones, and now I have a shop full of tools and I am in pursuit of the perfect cabochon.

I start with rough rock and slab it up on one of my diamond saws. Then I look at the slab, sometimes for days, searching for the magical portrait that nature hid in the rock. When I find the cabochon I trim off the excess rock, grind it to shape and finally polish the gem.

I named my Etsy shop MagicStones because I am amazed at how beautiful and magical nature can be. Each of my cabochons is an attempt to express that magic.

Photos
The photos are taken with a Nikon SLR digital camera with a 50mm macro lens. The photos are taken 12 - 18 inches under state of the art 50-watt photography lights (4700k). I never enhance photos to make them look better, rather I do my best to capture the gem as it truly looks. I also try to take pictures with different color backgrounds to give a better idea of the stones true color. Different computer monitors may show variations in color.
