Announcement   Thank you for stopping by! I have many ready to ship unicorns and the debut of my updated 2018 unicorn style. For family reasons I am currently not able to take custom orders. You are welcome to reserve a spot on my wait list for customs if you don't see an animal that you like in my ready-to-ship selection.

While you are here, take look at my lion, Gabriel. He is my prized creation and my very first realistic animal with over 30 hours of hand sewn details and gigantic fluffy mane.

My animals have machine sewn seams for strength and hand sewn details including the fluffiest and fullest manes. Each is completely handmade by me, from start to finish. Each strand of the mane is placed by hand. Parts of the unicorns are stitched by hand.

Proudly a copyright registered artist. For information about my registered copyrights or licensing, feel free to contact me.

About

Mainsail Studio: 20 Years of Happily Ever After

I’ve always been nostalgic for the magic of my childhood: imaginary play, art, costumes, animals, and sailboating adventures to little islands where my sisters and I became dragons, pirates, unicorns, and fairies.

Every little person has a big imagination to inspire. At Mainsail Studio, it’s tremendous fun to make those magic moments come true for modern kids, from handmade fairy and dragon wings to stuffed zebra and unicorn heads for wall mounting (“faux taxidermy”) to butterfly antennae headbands and more. My work is all my own, from the fabric I design myself (printed at Spoonflower in Durham, NC) to the sewing patterns to the making and the final touches.

I began sewing and sketching as a teenager, but wasn’t convinced that it was a viable option for a full-time career. I pursued work in tourism and retail marketing for about 15 years before realizing I could no longer feign my interest or passion for a “sensible” job. So Mainsail Studio was born! I started designing fabric for my own projects in 2010, which quickly evolved into experimenting with cut-and-sew patterns and costumes. After a stuffed unicorn I made for my daughter turned out wonky and lumpy, she asked me to just save the head and mount it on her wall. I realized that if I started doing faux taxidermy, I could just focus on sweet stuffed animal faces. Now they are bestsellers in my shop!

In 2016, I began converting my designs into DIY sewing patterns, currently available for purchase at Sprout Patterns. I use my four kids as guinea pigs for my designs: no prototype makes it to my shop without their approval! As a full-time maker with a tremendously supportive family, I work in my home studio, looking out into the forest at the woodland creatures that walk past and inspire me everyday.

Returns and exchanges
My policy is simple. I put my heart and soul into each piece and I make sure the quality is perfect before shipping. But if for some reason it just isn't what you expected or you change your mind, please send it back. I'd rather get my work back and proved a refund than have it sitting somewhere unloved and unused. Please notify me within 14 days if you have a change of heart.

My only exception is that I cannot refund internationally shipped items if the return is due to VAT or import fees. Please be sure you understand before ordering what your tax obligations for your own country. I also cannot refund custom clothing/costume orders if the refund is requested AFTER the special event has taken place and the costume has been worn. For example if you request custom vests or wings for a Halloween or a wedding or party, you cannot return them after the event.
Payment
I collect Paypal and Credit Cards. I ship after payment has been received.
Shipping
I'm happy to ship to international customers in any country via special request. By requesting an international order you understand and agree to the following: Any customs fees, import taxes and VAT are your responsibility. If these fees might be too expensive for you, please check into your country's policy before requesting the international order, these fees can be surprisingly high. In the UK and Europe expect a notice from customs requesting at least 20% of your total purchase price to be paid in taxes before the post will deliver your package.
Additional policies and FAQs
My costumes are made with my own patterns and illustrations. I love sharing my work and teaching others, but I take my copyrighted designs very seriously. If you are interested in my work and would like to try making some wings yourself, I do offer my raw fabric for sale to other makers. Please contact me for more information.
