About

I have always loved gazing at the stars, getting lost in their magic & infinite possibilities...

I live in my home town of Wellington, New Zealand, where I’ve been running my own handmade business since I started it as a hobby in 2009. Imogen Wilson Jewellery https://www.etsy.com/shop/findimogenwilson was born when, after selling at my first craft fair I was approached by the owner of a local shop and asked if she could stock my earrings. The rest, as they say, is history!

For several years I worked as bookseller by day, a maker and star gazer by night, and sold at craft fairs on the weekend.

Fast forward to 2013, and I found myself in a unique position: I was getting married and going on a two month honeymoon. My day job couldn’t give me that much time off. I could request less leave and have a shorter honeymoon. Or I could quit my job and leap into the big, scary unknown world of self-employment. And seeing as I made roughly the same selling cranes as I did working 9-5…

I quit my job.

It was completely terrifying, and yet it also wasn't at all. It felt right; I felt ready. I've never been happier with my work or my life. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lot of hard work and very long hours, but I am giving it a shot and it’s a great feeling betting on myself!
I have always been creative, and have dabbled in every form of making you can imagine. From sewing, to pottery, painting, metal work, and everything in between. When I returned from honeymoon with oodles of time at my disposal, instead of just expanding the origami jewellery range I already had I also created a totally two totally new brands- Major Tom Jewellery https://www.etsy.com/nz/shop/MajorTomJewellery & Ex Libris Jewellery https://www.etsy.com/shop/ExLibrisJewellery!

My original business had a simple conception, I loved the idea of wearing a pair of origami crane earrings- so I made some. After receiving compliments on that first pair (and realising how fun they were to make), I sold them. The business grew and morphed day by day. I made it up as I went along, and it grew and changed as I learnt more. Creating Major Tom & Ex Libris- two new brands, after four years working on the old one, was such a different experience. But the idea came from the same place, it was something I wanted to wear myself... and I thought other people would too.

I have always loved gazing at the stars, getting lost in their magic & infinite possibilities. My husband is also an avid astronomy enthusiast and his love of photographing the night's sky, and educating himself about what he is seeing piqued my interest further. I made my first pair of astronomy cufflinks as a gift for him, and after he received many compliments I decided to make more to sell, and expand to include jewellery for women too.

I am also, as you may have guessed, a bit of a Bowie fan. When I was considering starting A THIRD brand it seemed like too much work. But keeping each of my themes separate and cohesive was important to me... When I came up with the idea to name my brand 'Major Tom' the decision was made for me. I couldn't NOT use it, it was like it was meant to be.

I love how being a 'one man band' means there’s a variety of work, there is always something to do, and it's different every day. Sometimes motivation is hard, but often the moment it's lagging will be when I receive a bit of feedback from a happy customer, which makes it all worthwhile.

I make jewellery that is fun yet elegant and unique. It's important to me that my work is different, makes people smile, and doesn't take itself too seriously! As much as I love simplistic jewellery made from precious metals, or a bit of bling now and again, I am proud that my jewellery is a conversation starter where other pieces might not be.

I make things I enjoy making, enjoy wearing, and enjoy promoting. It's something I can do from the comfort of my house (while the newest addition to the business, my 3 month old baby, sleeps in the other room). I am adding to the micro-economy, to the handmade movement, and creating something from (mostly) re-purposed materials. When you buy from me, you buy from my heart, from my hands, from my family. You add to my story, and become part of it.

A mentor of mine, Jess Van Den, said it best:

“I believe in handmade. I believe in the power and the goodness of the micro-economy. I buy handmade wherever I can. I believe that the more of us who succeed, the better our world and our lives will be.”

I do ship internationally; however, please remember I am shipping from NZ. I cannot promise your package will arrive by a certain date. Sometimes packages are held up in Customs for seemingly no reason, and transit times vary wildly. For example, I have had packages reach the UK anywhere from 10 days to 24 days after sending.

Please make sure your Etsy address and PayPal address are the same, as confusion with address will lead to delays with your order.

Please note tracking is not included with your order- NZ Post does not include tracking either domestic nor international tracking as part of their standard shipping cost. If you'd like to upgrade your shipping to include tracking, please let me know, however it can be quite expensive.

If your package does not turn up within the expected time frame, please contact me and I will do my best to rectify the situation! However, please be aware that I don't consider a parcel 'lost' in the post until it has been a full 30 days from the date of shipping, and I will not replace an item sooner than this.

How to Care for your Major Tom Jewellery:
Most of the Major Tom Jewellery is glass fronted. Given a good whack it could break or shatter. Treat it with care, as you would any other glass object and try to resist dropping it on the ground

Please keep in mind that all items in this shop are completely handmade, and therefore some small imperfections may be present. Hopefully, you will, as I do, see any small imperfection as part of what makes a personally hand-made item unique. After all, we are, none of us, perfect!
