An upcycling partnership transforming textile waste sent to Ghana from the Global North into handmade, tie-dye products
MFC stands for Make Fashion Clean.
MFC Tie-Dye Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit organization based in the U.S. that was founded in 2017 as the primary partner of the Matilda Flow Inclusion (MFI) Foundation in Greater Accra, Ghana to achieve the MFI Foundation's founder Matilda Lartey's vision of seeing her tie-dye products sold widely outside of Ghana, in addition to domestically. The MFI Foundation is registered as a non-profit, non-governmental organization in Ghana and has a mission of creating inclusive work and job training opportunities with living wages in the creative economy for artisans who have been displaced by the fast fashion and secondhand clothing industries. The products sold in this Etsy Store were designed and produced collaboratively by MFC Tie-Dye Inc. and the MFI Foundation and are some of our early prototypes and experiments. The majority of products in this store are upcycled; a select few are made from organic cotton materials as part of a limited line of products early in the partnership. These products are clearly indicated in the store.
MFC's upcycled products are made from textile waste that was sent to Ghana, primarily from the United States, Canada, and Europe, which was then cleaned, tie-dyed, and upcycled by artisans at the Matilda Flow Inclusion (MFI) Foundation studio in Greater Accra, Ghana into new products. Through this work, the MFI Foundation prevents textile waste from entering the environment in Ghana, generates meaningful employment and apprenticeship opportunities in the creative economy for artisans that have been displaced by the secondhand clothing trade, and raises awareness about the harmful social and environmental health impacts of global fashion pollution.
