Ramblings of a Mantua-Maker

In 1986 my boyfriend took me to BayCon and my first costume contest. I've been addicted to costuming ever since. My boyfriend married someone else (a wonderful woman), and I 'married' my sewing and craft room. ;-)

My costumes -- historic and fantastic -- have won awards at Costume Con, organized by the International Costuming Guild, WesterCon, BayCon, and WorldCon.

I create sewing patterns for historical clothing from the skin out - underwear, corsets, skirts, and bodices. It seems important to me that we remember how clothes used to be made, especially because clothing has changed so much, from the cloth to the styles we choose.

All Mantua-Maker patterns are designed, drawn, and written by me, then printed in small batches by local print shops.

I also run three other Etsy shops:
MomNDadsJewelry
MagicSeeker
MumsParlor

I'm a long-time costumer and historical clothing lover. I also enjoy creating fantasy costumes, such as a centaur or a demon goddess. :-) I love to create historical sewing patterns and write books on historical costuming topics.

Welcome to the Mantua-Maker, a historical clothing sewing pattern company, specializing in ladies' clothing. All patterns are multi-sized, and are based on actual garments, pattern drawings, engravings or photographs made during the time the garment was worn.

Each pattern is carefully researched and tested, so that any garment made from a Mantua-Maker pattern will be historically accurate, but with allowance made for the changes in women's physical build between the time the garment was originally worn and modern times.

Sewing should be fun! I try to simplify my pattern pieces to the most basic - but historically accurate - shapes. No fussy details - unless they are unavoidable to create an authentic costume. No bizarre concoctions - unless a period woman really wore it. Lots of options, variations, and decoration ideas.

I personally draft and describe my patterns: corset patterns, general underclothing and underpinning patterns, skirt patterns and bodice patterns. I work hard on creating instructions that are interesting, as well as useful. The instructions are geared toward someone who knows a little about sewing, but not necessarily a lot. Corsets need a little advanced sewing knowledge, but even there, with persistence and patience even a beginner can make a corset.

My apologies for shipping costs, but postage went up outrageously in January. I'll refund any excess postage costs over $1.00.

Enjoy!

Shipping
I ship all orders ASAP -- usually the next business day -- by USPS Mail, and I'll send you a shipping confirmation email. My apologies, but I can only ship to the address Etsy has on record.

Feel free to email me for a quote on shipping multiple patterns. I can weigh your order and ask the Post Office for exact charges. If I can ship it cheaper than my posted rates, I'll refund any excess postage over $1.00

Much to my regret, due to the appalling cost of overseas postage and the new higher Etsy fees, I can no longer accept overseas orders.

MagicSeeker, MomNDadsJewelry, and MumsParlor

For a long list of FAQs, please see https://www.mantua-maker.com/FAQ.html

FYI 1 - All instructions are in English.

FYI 2 - I do have a cat (allergy warning; my cat has such fine fur I find stray hairs in places she could *never* get to!) but she has little contact with my patterns. My home is smoke-free, but vintage books and trim may carry their own distinctive odors.
