The first time I looked out the window and saw our cat Reggie marching across the backyard ahead of my husband — who was pulling a lawn trailer behind him — I thought: that cat has no idea he's not in charge. He absolutely is.
Reggie is a void. A black hole in cat form, one year old, full of opinions. He has a harness, a rotation of interactive toys, and a husband who has more energy for him than I do. He deserves younger parents. He makes do with us.
Marble & Ember grew from a life full of animals — Reggie now, and before him Cupcake and Jelly Bean, two Japanese Chin who came to us from a rescue and stayed for 11 and 14 years. When they were gone, I understood something about the way we love animals: a photograph isn't always enough. Sometimes you need art.
