Beautiful places, Beautiful Memories
A while ago my wife and I took a trip to Scotland to visit my sister and her husband. At the time I was really interested in photography and had a bought myself the nicest camera I've ever owned. We spent two weeks driving around visiting breathtaking and interesting places. The next year we flew to Ireland and did the same thing. After having all these photos of beautiful places, I was trying to find a way to make them unique enough to hang on the wall. I found that uniqueness by cropping them in a circle, this was before circles were as popular as they are today. I loved how the circle crop affected the composition of the landscape. Some photos looked great as a circle and some didn't. I started to find patterns, for instance, anything architectural looks like you're looking through a port hole. So cityscapes look horrible in a circle.
At a show, an older gentlemen told me he grew up in the smokey mountains and this photo of mine looked exactly like how he remembered that area. I thought that was interesting because I had greatly altered the colors of the photo he was looking at. I began to realize that our memories are typically more vivid than reality. When we picture a place or time, the colors are more saturated, the lighting is more dramatic, and the emotions are more intense. So I became more intentional with how I colored and altered my photos. The subsequent responses from people became more interesting. People started telling me stories about times when they visited or lived in the places I photographed. And they would comment on how well I captured that place. I love the idea that these photos remind people or visualize for people the pleasantness of their memories.
