"I am a proud wife and mother of 2 handsome little fellas, who loves to create. All. The. Time. I am especially inspired by things that come from nature.
EDUCATION AND ART BACKROUND: In 1998, I received a B.S. in Horticulture from Iowa State University and have been working with plants since I was a little girl puttering around in my dad's vegetable garden. Since I was old enough to hold a crayon, I have loved to make and create art, even selling prints of my work here and there throughout my high school and college years. When I started college, I found that Horticulture was the best way for me to fuse my interests and passions for art, design, and nature.
PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND:
Public Gardens: I have worked as a professional gardener at world renowned public gardens like Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, and Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, Illinois. Working in these places with so many talented designers and horticulturists allowed me to use flowering plants and foliages of infinite varieties as my color palette, weaving them together to form displays that inspired not only me, but all those who took time to enjoy them.
Cut Flowers and Floristry: After my years spent working in public gardens, my husband and I moved back to Iowa and farmed with his family, where he and I had the opportunity to work with a few acres of land to grow cut flowers. We grew, picked, and designed bouquets to sell at the Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market for 7 years. I also sold dried flower wreaths through my on farm flower shop and my first website. Throughout that time, I took thousands of photos of our crops, many of which you can find as prints for sale in my Etsy shop today.
HOW MARIE STEPHENS DESIGN WAS BORN: I have always loved art and being creative, so horticulture and floristry were a perfect fit for me, until I decided to be a mom who wanted to stay at home with her family. Etsy has been the perfect outlet for me to share my love for nature and it thrills me to see my photography and functional photo art traveling all over the United States!
INSPIRATIONS: God, my family, good friends, the kindness of strangers, a beautiful sky, a warm embrace, a great song, color, and coffee, lots of coffee! Oh, and chocolate! Can't forget the chocolate!
