Frequently asked questions

What do you mean by 'hand made'?

I make every item in my shop using hand building methods. This means I do not use a potter's wheel (the method we normally think of with pottery!). The benefit of this is that each item is truly unique and it also means I don't produce row upon row of completely identical items. There will always be slight variations between my pieces- I absolutely aim to produce pieces that work together as 'matching' sets, but there will of course be slight variations in the dimensions, the slightly imperfect shapes and even the glaze finish. Clay is a natural material, giving a naturally varied finish, which may affect the shade and natural speckles found in the clay body I use.

How quickly will my item be shipped? Which shipping methods do you use?

As a general rule I have given a dispatch time of 3-5 working days. If you need a particularly speedy delivery then please contact me directly and I will confirm whether or not this is possible.

I use Royal Mail Second Class postage within the UK and Standard International Delivery for orders outside the UK. Please note that I do NOT use tracked shipping UNLESS REQUESTED, as it is a more expensive shipping option that not every customer would like. However, please select 1st Class/'2nd Class signed for' or 'Tracked International' when placing your order if you would prefer these shipping methods. For large and/or wholesale orders I will automatically send orders via courier.

Shipping over payment

I will always refund any extra costs in shipping over the value of £1. I do not make a profit on shipping, the cost is simply there to cover Royal Mail charges, packaging materials, and the time it takes for me to carefully wrap and send off your purchase.

Are my items dishwasher safe?

In general I would always recommend hand washing for handmade items, however all of my work is stoneware, meaning it is fired to extremely high temperatures and can technically withstand a dishwasher. I choose to test all my pottery in my own dishwasher with no problems resulting and if you trust your dishwasher(!) then your item should be absolutely fine. If you have any doubts or concerns or predict extremely frequent washing or use particularly harsh detergents then hand washing may be a kinder option.

Can I use my item in the microwave?

I’m afraid I have been unable to test my pieces in a microwave (I don’t own one!) so would not like to give a definite ‘yes’ to this question. Again, all my items have been fired to stoneware temperatures of over 1200 degrees celcius but this does not automatically make them safe in a microwave and therefore the decision to do so would not be based on a recommendation from myself.

How long will a custom order take to make?

This depends entirely on your request, the size of the item, and the number you would like. I will always give as accurate an estimate as possible and will try to send your item out to you as quickly as possible. Please bear in mind that ceramics don't like to be rushed(!) and I would always rather give you an item of the highest quality than one that has been rushed to meet a deadline.

What is the process if I decide to return an item?

If you decide to return an item because you have changed your mind (within 7 days of receiving the item) I will refund the full purchase price of the item as soon as it is returned to me safely and undamaged. You will need to pay for the return postage and unfortunately I will not be able to refund the initial shipping costs. If you are returning an item from outside the UK please mark the item RETURNING MERCHANDISE FOR REFUND on your customs form. This is to ensure no customs charges are made, as I would have to deduct these from your refund. Please contact me first before returning an item to confirm the return process!

What if my item has been damaged during delivery or is delayed/lost?

Damage: this is thankfully quite rare but if your item arrives and is broken or damaged please immediately take a picture of the item and packaging in order for me to be able to make a claim for the damage. I do my absolute best to ensure items are wrapped carefully, with bubble wrap, bio degradable packing peanuts and firm cardboard boxes and will always replace any damaged items.
Delay: on some occasions delivery takes longer than expected and I ask that you are patient enough to give an item one month before considering it lost. I obviously have no control over postal services and when items have to transfer between different postal services and go through customs unexpected delays can occur.

Wholesale availability

Please contact me directly for any enquiries into wholesale purchasing for any of the items in my shop. As a general rule I am only able to do small batch wholesale for some of my items and only within the UK, as to ship large numbers of any item abroad tends to push the cost of wholesale items up quite substantially. Please feel free to enquire regarding postage costs if you are interested however.

Germany - Verpackungsgesetz (LUCID Packaging Register)

In 2019 Germany’s Packaging Act VerpackG came into effect, imposing requirements on online retailers selling to buyers in Germany. The Packaging Act promotes recycling and reuse of packaging materials (e.g. cardboard boxes, tape, and bubble wrap).

My company Megan Louise Ceramics is registered at the Packaging Register of the Stiftung Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister (Foundation Central Agency Packaging Register – ZSVR) with registration number DE3892065475426. My Dual System Licensing partner for the collection, sorting & recycling of the packaging is ACTIVATE by RECLAY.

As consumer please ensure that all received packaging is disposed of in the right recycling containers, Blue for all paper & cardboard and Yellow for all plastics.
