About five months ago, I was in a bit of a rut. I felt stressed all of the time and, in general, just not like myself. I decided it was time to do some soul searching. Immediately, I became obvious that I had stopped doing some of the things I loved like reading and crafting and writing just for fun. Well, I took up writing fan fiction and started reading a bit obsessively and I began crafting again.
At first, my crafting was inspired by things I found here on Etsy and on DeviantArt. It didn't take long for me to become a bit obsessed with sewing plushies and trying my hand at creating the things I saw online like squishy food or chubby penguins. I never did become overly proficient at sewing, but the act of creation and recreation drummed up my creativity so much so that I began crocheting dolls of my own design rather than from a set pattern. I would pick characters I loved and try to recreate them in a cutesy way that appealed to me. I love cute, cuddly, chubby little things so that's what I created.
At first, I was just creating for myself, but then, I realized my office was starting to fill up with stuffed toys. I didn't know what to do with them all so I thought that I might give Etsy another try. I'd attempted to sell scarves on Etsy two years before but never managed to sell a thing. To me, it was taking a big chance to put my stuff up online, but I felt ready to take it. Now, I'm glad I did.
Melissa's Cute Crochet might not be a big shop, but I love making my dolls and sharing them with the world all the same. I'm so thankful that there are people who seem to appreciate chubby, cuddly creatures as much as I do.
