Making miniatures my way, regardless :)
My name is Michael Mortimer and I’ve been making miniature furniture twenty something years. I attend Kensington dollshouse festival in may and also December.
In the past I’ve exhibited at Tom bishops show in Chicago, the Philadelphia show, and various other city’s, including, Dallas, Sarasota, Sturbridge, Cleveland, Las Vegas, Virginia, Rhode Island, Los Angeles , Arnhem in the Netherlands and numerous uk venues.
I specialise in a distressed Tudor style of furniture.
Virtually everything I’ve made has been designed by myself, it might look of a period because thats what its supposed to do, but they are in fact recent designs.
This gives me the scope and freedom to do just what and how i feel with my furniture, I’ve tried different period, but this is the one I’m comfortable with, and seem to be best at.
One unique feature to my furniture is its message, every piece ,(mostly) leaves me with a message attached.
I’ve been doing this since around 96, so theres a whole lot of messages out there!
This habit started way back when if i heard something, read something, or just generally picked up on something that felt too important to overlook, I’d make a note of it, and before long ended up with a pile of these things, some on scraps of paper, some in note pads, just a general random pile of phrases.
I’m not exactly sure what prompted me to make the next step of getting them in order, printing them , cutting them into bite size pieces and sticking them to the backs of my furniture, but it felt good, like I’d saved them for others to see and share.
They dont always make sense to the onlooker as they’ve sometimes been edited down , just a practical measure to get them to fit on the space i have, i don’t think its that important that they are totally understandable, to me they’re just fine as they are.
