How did Midnight Stitches start?
I started sewing after my son was born so I could make him cute covers for his cloth diapers, about 6.5yrs ago. Shortly after, I discovered the Bit of Whimsy doll patterns and fell in love. During the next 2 years I perfected the art of applique and started making custom shirts and dolls for friends and family as gifts.
While I was pregnant with my daughter (over 4 years ago now!), my aunt taught me how to crochet. My first project was a large blanket for my daughter. I was able to finish it 2 weeks before she was born. LOL. Crochet is something I can do while still being able to watch my kids and while I'm in the car. I taught myself how to read crochet patterns and learned new techniques from YouTube videos. I quickly fell in love with how relaxing crochet can be.
I have also learned how much people of all ages appreciate and love hand-made gifts, especially custom gifts. After my daughter turned one, I decided to open my little Etsy store. I started this store to help me fund my fabric and sewing/crochet pattern addiction. And because I work full-time out of the house, I usually only get to sew at night, after the kids go to bed. I stay up past midnight more often than not when trying to finish a project or an order, hence the name Midnight Stitches!
