The joy of textile art
For me textile art has a huge benefit over other visual art forms by adding texture, sheen and depth. Especially the colours from the plants I use for my eco prints have a multitude of colour components, often ten times as much as industrial colours. Their unsurpassed beauty inspires me to complement them with organic embroidery.
My first source of inspiration is nature. Its beauty gives me strength and comfort. Only in nature I feel truly at home. I tend to focus on details more than on the whole picture with a near-scientific interest in organic structures and patterns.
I like to work with organic fabrics, preferably dyed myself with botanical dyes. I also like the randomness of the process, the surprising outcome and the challenges it creates for me as an artist.
My second source of inspiration is history: the huge textile inheritance that came to me not only through the women in my family but also through textile art from around the world. Textile arts were always so much more than just a frivolous embellishment of everyday live. Stitches hold there own magic and, for my part, cannot be replaced by pencil marks or strokes of paint. By making textile art I build upon this inheritance and expand it.
