Modern Domestic
The way I run my shop is not much different than the way I practice design. I take a user-centered approach. I specialize in domestic housewares. My husband and I both grew up in the sixties and seventies and we are both very nostalgic for items we remember around the house and from our childhood and that has certainly influenced my curatorial style; something you might see right out of a 1950s House Beautiful magazine. My children really get a kick out of seeing something in our house or in the shop that might also be featured in an old home magazine! I am interested in curating a shop that taps into the user’s emotion, an emotion that I know I feel when I come across nostalgic finds. A recent client told me that she has been searching for bedspread “like the one she had when she was a 20-something”…she had never been to Etsy but her broad search led her to my shop. She started emphatically communicating with me, thinking that just maybe, she had found it and sure enough, it was the one. A large percentage of my customers have stories like this and nothing makes me happier than to have this very real, very emotional connection. It really is a different approach and flips the focus from the designer to the user. Therefore, many of my customers are not collectors but purchase nostalgic items for everyday use.
