The mind behind Moki Trading Post
I should begin with, why the American west theme, when I was born and raised in England? It all began with horses. I was a horse-mad child, I loved to ride, and also to draw horses. Back then westerns were on TV regularly and I loved all the action and galloping horses- and then there was the western tack! I found it much more appealing and ornate than the English saddles and bridles I was used to.
I began making Native American style tack for my model horses at some point, and in my early twenties was selling my model horse tack sets on eBay. As I became more involved, I wanted to make my own model horses. By chance I found an image of a Native American made horse model, or doll from the 1800s, and that is where the inspiration for my horses grew from. I have since seen some of these historical Native American horse dolls in person, whilst visiting museums on our travels.
Inspiration for all of the artwork I produce comes from our travels in the USA. Our road trips to visit the national parks, monuments, state parks and museums have been hugely influential on me. Travel really has opened my mind and made me dream big!
I would also like to note that the packaging used to pack my items, is mostly re-used (boxes, tissue paper, some bubble wrap), and recyclable where possible.
