A little story about Monkey Steps
When I was in college, I designed a conceptual logo for the San Diego Zoo as part of a branding assignment at SDSU. This visual identity is one of my favourite conceptual projects and it's still part of my portfolio website today. I've always loved the monkey icon and wanted to repurpose it, I just didn't know what to use it for...
Flash forward nearly 15 years - I was working part-time as a designer at a marketing agency in London and full-time as a mom. I wanted to combine my two lives by designing something for children. A very creative colleague of mine helped me come up with the name Monkey Steps for my hypothetical company and I held onto that idea for several years.
Whilst I was on maternity leave with my second child, another friend of mine suggested that I start designing and selling printables on Etsy. Suddenly Monkey Steps found its purpose...
My original plan was to sell printable party themes, but the Covid-19 lockdown began soon after I created my shop. As my son and his friends could no longer attend preschool, I shifted my focus and designed some themed worksheets and activities for them to do at home. I started with space and pirates, then by popular request I moved onto animals, unicorns and rainbows. And now these themed learning packs are all available in my shop, with more printables coming soon.
