Crafting and creating makes my heart happy and I hope my creations make your heart happy too! ;)
The Fun-Filled World of Education
My career in education began in the Galena R-2 school system, where I dedicated myself as an elementary teacher to creating a classroom filled with happiness and warmth. I loved decorating with apples, bears, chimes, and frogs, as well as special gifts from my students. Every nook and cranny of my classroom was a treasure trove of joy.
Over the years, I transitioned from teacher to elementary principal, and eventually, to Superintendent of the Galena R-2 school system. My mission was to ensure that everyone who entered our schools felt a sense of well-being in a safe and secure environment.
Retirement: A Time of Change
In 2012, I retired from my beloved career in education. The slow pace of retirement was a stark contrast to the fast-paced, 24/7 demands of my previous role.
Who Called Retirement the “Golden Years”?
In December 2014, my life took an unexpected turn when I suffered a brain bleed (stroke). This event marked the beginning of a fight for survival. While I have recovered from the physical symptoms, I still face short-term memory issues. I rely on notebooks and scraps of paper to jot down information and ideas to refresh my “new brain.” Despite the challenges, I have accepted this new reality and adapted to my unique world.
Life Can Change in the Blink of an Eye
My stroke profoundly changed my life. I am incredibly blessed to have my husband, Dervid Allen, by my side. His unwavering love and support guided me through the darkest days. He never gave up on me and stayed strong throughout the ordeal. At the time of my stroke, I was not expected to live, but I believe God had a reason for my survival. I slowly gained strength and learned to live differently. Despite further health challenges, people are often surprised to learn that I suffered a stroke because I show no physical signs of impairment.
Answers to My Question
In May 2017, our son Brandon suffered a stroke at the age of 35. Our lives changed again, filled with moments of disbelief and fear. However, our previous experience with my stroke became a beacon of hope. Brandon, like me, made a miraculous recovery. Our family has been through a challenging journey, but we receive God’s grace and blessings daily. These events have deepened my gratitude and thankfulness, which I incorporate into my creations.
Let the Crafting Begin
Needing something to fill my days, my daughter-in-law, Michelle Allen of Raggedy Pants Designs, suggested I try crafting Tussie Mussies (cone-shaped decorative containers). After researching online and reading books, I created my first Tussie Mussie post-stroke. I discovered a love for crafting and expanded to floral arrangements, wreaths, and wall décor. My crafting world is now filled with flowers, ribbons, lace, pearls, and countless other embellishments that bring me joy.
I have always loved creating beautiful things—wreaths, floral arrangements, ribbons, and more. The sight of shiny, glittery, and sparkling “bling” makes my heart happy. Since January 2018, I have immersed myself in the crafting world, watching Facebook Lives and YouTube videos to inspire my creations. My business has grown, and I hope to touch others by sharing my story.
