Imagination is a gift they will never outgrow.
My grandmother taught me to knit when I was six. Needlework, cross stitch, and other handwork soon followed. My mother taught me to use a sewing machine when I was twelve and a made the most ill-fitting blue corduroy jumper dress known to man. I was hooked.
I sewed so much on my mother’s machine that I was given my own for my 16th birthday. I wore out the motor on that starter machine and upgraded to my current Elna for my 18th birthday. I was one of two architecture students who had a sewing machine and a laptop on my desk at college.
I pursued a career in architecture, unsure of how to make a living sewing without becoming a fashion designer (um… no). I loved it. I loved every minute of designing and dreaming and talking with clients and watching the thoughts from my head come to life in the real world. And then I had a baby.
Suddenly, my priorities shifted. Dramatically. And as the newborn new mama stupor started to fade, I found that the urge to design was still strong. I started making toys for my baby. Then for my next baby. Then friends and strangers started asking to buy them. I had found the creative life that I was born to live.
Designing and making toys satisfies a deep ache in my heart. To create lovely, useful, developmentally appropriate little pieces of art for children to explore and touch and play with is a design dream come true. Helping parents give good gifts to their children is the icing on the creative cake.
