Per molto tempo, ho pensato che mia sorella minore avesse tutti i geni creativi della famiglia. Sapeva disegnare. Sapeva dipingere, poteva scolpire. Tutto ciò che ha creato è stato bellissimo. La invidiavo, ma mi rassegnavo alla vita di un non artista perché tutto quello che provavo era un flop. Fino a quando non ho scoperto la trapuntatura. Poi, tutto è cambiato.

Adoro lavorare con il tessuto. C'è così tanta varietà disponibile, e mi emoziono nell'usarne un po'. Piuttosto che essere coordinate e attentamente pianificate, le mie trapunte tendono ad essere ruvide con un sorprendente mix di colori e motivi. Adoro fare qualcosa che sia sia bello che utile.

Tutti nella mia famiglia dormono sotto una trapunta che ho fatto. Ogni bambino nato nella mia famiglia allargata riceve una trapunta da me. Sono sicuro di donare almeno una trapunta all'anno in beneficenza. Tuttavia, ci vuole molto tempo per trapuntare a mano una trapunta delle dimensioni di un letto, e ho scoperto che desideravo una gratificazione più immediata.

Quando ho aperto un negozio di arti in fibra, ho trovato la mia soluzione: maglieria e uncinetto. Non sono la cucitrice più veloce del pianeta, ma la portabilità dei progetti di filati significa che raramente mi troverai senza qualcosa che tenga le mani occupate. Ora, lavorare a maglia e trapuntare si contendono la mia attenzione, e quando in realtà non sto cucendo fisicamente qualcosa insieme, sono probabilmente assorto in uno dei titoli della mia vasta collezione di narrativa artigianale.

For the longest time, I thought my younger sister had all the creative genes in the family. She could draw. She could paint, she could sculpt. Everything she created was beautiful. I envied her, but resigned myself to a non-artist's life because everything I tried was a flop. Until I discovered quilting. Then, everything changed.

I love working with fabric. There is so much variety available, and I thrill in using a little bit of all of it. Rather than being coordinated and carefully planned, my quilts tend to be scrappy with a surprising mix of colors and patterns. I love making something that is both beautiful AND useful.

Everyone in my family sleeps under a quilt that I made. Every baby born into my extended family receives a quilt from me. I am sure to donate at least one quilt per year to charity. However, it takes a long time to hand quilt a bed-sized quilt, and I found that I was yearning for more immediate gratification.

When I opened a fiber arts shop, I found my fix - knitting and crocheting. I'm not the fastest stitcher on the planet, but the portability of yarn projects means you will rarely find me without something to keep my hands busy. Now, knitting and quilting vie for my attention, and when I am not actually physically stitching something together, I am likely engrossed in one of the titles in my extensive craft fiction collection.
