  • The basic shape of the carving is worked in the round with large areas of excess wood carved away.
  • The carving process slows down with smaller cuts being made with the knife to define the carving's features.
  • Tiny detail work is done by taking slivers of wood away to create expressive body language and faces.
  • Details are brought out with two to three coats of tung oil, which also seals and protects the wood.
  • The carving starts with a flat pencil sketch cut out in silhouette.
