*Why Butterflies*
I am inspired by the transformation that occurs when resin touches a butterfly wing. The prismatic effect is eye-catching and I love it.
*How It's Made*
I seal the wings in jeweler's grade resin. Some species lose their luminescence in resin, so a few are preserved in glass rather than resin. Each wing is unique, therefore each piece of jewelry is unique. I also enjoy incorporating natural stones in some pieces. The butterfly wings in resin are completely waterproof and all of the pieces are very durable.
*Where Do You Get Butterflies?*
My butterflies are primarily procured from the Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth Minnesota. I also use butterflies I find once their natural life span is complete.
*Why Help Butterfly Populations?*
Butterflies carry pollen over much greater distances than other pollinators; some travel up to 50 miles each day. As pollinators it is vital that butterfly species are preserved. The Monarch butterfly population has dropped by almost 90% in the last 20 years. Currently there are 9 species of butterfly on the endangered list in North America.
