From photographer to rug dealer!
In December of 2017, I spent two weeks traveling and photographing around Morocco with a friend as a means to reconnect with myself creatively and be inspired by a new place and culture. During the trip I became completely enamored by the art and history of Moroccan rugs. I dove head first into learning all I could about the various tribes and types of rugs, their history, and the tradition of the craft being passed on though generations of Amazigh (Berber) women. Needless to say, I became pretty obsessed. On the final day of my trip I met a man who suggested the idea of going into the business of selling rugs myself. Several months later I found myself back in Morocco on a sourcing trip to buy rugs and other handmade items for the home and a few weeks later I launched OUIVE. In a world where “fast fashion” and disposable goods have transformed our relationship to and responsibility for the things we own, OUIVE aims to slow things down a bit. Our purpose is celebrate an appreciation for art and traditions of handmade crafts with the idea of the “slow home”; a selective curation of ethically sourced heirloom pieces which support the traditions of the artisans, have stories to tell and serve as something to cherish and be passed on through generations.
