Not your grandmother's house...it's better!
Hi. I’m Christine, and I am the owner, designer, seamstress and product manufacturer for OhmeThreads. From my South Florida workshop, I produce clothing, accessories and housewares that represent my core inspirations – “color” and “family.” These two general ideas are present in every item I create. Add a pinch of punk-rock edginess and a splash of nerd-core to these tradition-inspired pieces, and you get Ohme Threads – not just a brand, but a piece of who I am.
The word “Ohme” comes from my great-grandmother, “Naomi,” who’s name I could never seem to fully pronounce as a toddler. My grandmothers, both seamstresses, have always been a prominent inspiration to me and my art. Sitting at my sewing machine today, I think back to childhood watching my grandmother Wanda sew clothing for the kids, a sea of fabric and trim between us. It looks oddly like my studio today, a bit messy.
Not only does the legacy of my grandmothers live on in my brand, but their classic tastes as well. My grandmother will see me in one of my dresses and say “I wore something just like that when I was your age,” or “Did you take that material off our couch?!” It’s classic with a modern twist.
I formed my company over 10 years ago, as a teenager in Stuart, Florida, sewing custom items for friends, family and others. After attending art school, I branched out from one-off apparel, doing merchandising for indie bands on tour – getting a chance to see the country by tour van (and car) while selling band merch as well as my own brand.
Since college, I have worked full-time creating clothing, jewelry and housewares for a number of large chain stores. While it is great to have a career in the industry you love, it feels more like a hiatus from creating my own products. I awoke this year with a newfound inspiration to create something that is, well, “me.” I've got years of ideas just waiting to be sewn, screened and printed.
