American, Canadian and Australian customers: I work with specialist printers in the US, Canada and Australia so that I can print and dispatch your map from nearby, rather than from the UK. *** About my shop ***
This is the Etsy shop for the Unique Maps Co. (est. 1984). I make custom, old maps of London and the UK. I hunt and salvage beautiful old maps, get the highest resolution scans, and spend hours cleaning up each map. They all look perfectly and classily old - not grubby or worn, like most old maps.

I can usually create unique, custom maps centred on specific locations. These are perfect birthday, Christmas and holiday gifts. Get in touch if you'd like to order a custom map.

I can also print and frame most maps up to very large sizes - sometimes as big as 3 or 4 meters wide. Some of my old city maps make for perfect statement or conversation pieces in hotels, pubs, bars, offices, etc.

About OldmapsShop

The Unique Maps Co. specialises in rare, customised and beautiful old maps

Established in 1984, The Unique Map Co. is a purveyor of the finest and rarest old maps.

"OldMapsShop" is my relatively new presence here on Etsy, but rest assured that The Unique Maps Co.'s provenance goes back more than three decades.

The 'unique map' process begins with sourcing the original antique maps - some as old as 450 years old. I scour libraries, private collections and antique map shops to find the most interesting and beautiful old maps to sell to my discerning customers.

Sometimes it takes me months to track down the best, rarest and highest quality original maps. Sometimes I will be the first person to scan an antique map that hasn't been seen since the map was first published 200, 300 or even 400 years ago. Those maps are truly unique.

Many of the oldest maps are exceedingly rare. Handcoloured maps were expensive and were only affordable to nobles - and so sometimes there are only a few dozen copies of a map in existence.

I restore the maps at my specialist workshop in London, taking care to remove some of the dirt, grime and rips but leaving all of the original charm. Then I scan the maps in at very high resolution - thousands of dots per inch - so that you can be guaranteed that all of the names, places and original features of your vintage map will be perfectly preserved.

With the digital process I can then create different sizes of map, or customise maps to suit your needs. I can zoom in on a few streets, or colour your house so it sticks out on an old map. I can even blow maps up to meters wide. I have framed maps over 13 feet wide, created grids of framed maps, and even wallpapered some office walls with big maps.

My Unique Maps look beautiful and interesting on your wall, and make great birthday, housewarming or Christmas gifts too.

My framed large maps look great in hospitality spaces, such as pubs, bars, restaurants, offices and hotels.

Buy one of our maps and explore what the world used to look like 100, 200, 300, or sometimes even 400 years ago.

I'm a nerdy guy who used to be a professional photographer, was an editor in chief at Condé Nast, loves technology, and - as you can probably imagine - is completely besotted with old maps.

Frequently asked questions
US, Australian and Canadian orders

If you live in the US, Australia or Canada, your map will be sent from a specialist printer in your country, not from the UK.

I work with specialist printers around the world so that I can print and dispatch your map from nearby, rather than from the UK.

I have worked with each of these printers for a long time and have carefully checked their quality. You will get a perfect old map, I assure you.

This means your map will get to you quickly, you won't pay any customs duty, and it cuts down on CO2 from flying my maps across the world!

Message me if you have any questions.

Postage & packaging info

All of my maps are well packaged and sent in a rugged tube if unframed, or surrounded by foam if framed.

I try to send out all maps within 1 or 2 days of receiving your order, though some products (like face masks or mugs) can take longer to make.

If you select the free worldwide shipping option, you can usually expect to receive your map around 5 working days after you order. It may be faster or slower, depending on the impact of coronavirus in your country.

If you select Express Delivery at checkout your order will be sent by courier (Fedex, DHL, UPS, Parcelforce) and will usually arrive in 2-3 days.

How my unique maps are made

My maps are extremely high quality reproductions of original maps.

I source original, extremely rare maps from libraries, auction houses and private collections around the world, restore them at my London workshop, and then use specialist giclée inks and printers to create beautiful maps that look even better than the original.

My maps are printed on thick matte (not glossy) paper that feels high quality. In technical terms the paper weight/thickness is 10mil/190gsm. It's perfect for framing.

Please contact me if you're looking for a print on canvas or cotton rag.

Framing and hanging info

If you want a frame that's a specific colour or material, or want your map mounted/matted, please get in touch. I work with specialist framers around the world and have hundreds of framing options - so we should be able to find a frame that suits your decor/aesthetic.

My standard frame is a black wood frame. It is simple and quite modern looking. On maps up to 36 inches (91cm) the frame is 2cm (0.75in) wide. I use thicker frames on larger maps - usually between 35 and 60mm (1.4in to 2.4in).

All frames are provided "ready to hang", with either a string or brackets on the back. Very large frames will have heavy duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions... always get in touch!
