About

The Construction of Jewelry

{Hand-wrought jewelry. Wide-world inspired.}

I spent the greater part of a year doing volunteer construction work on educational centers in Brooklyn and Queens, New York. One of the best times of my life, helping others, using my two hands, learning new tools and trades. Part of my work involved steel stud framing and the use of wire and sheet metal. I continue to work in construction regularly, so using this background (and my love of metal and stone) I decided to try my hand at building something on a much different scale- comparatively small constructions which I hope are most wearable and lovely.

All of my peices are unique due to the fact that as many components of my jewelry as possible are hand-wrought and forged by my two hands. I try not to use anything pre-fabricated unless it utterly confounded me to make it personally. I only use a few hand tools, and I am completely self taught.

I am also heavily influenced by my extensive travels around the world- Europe, West Asia, North Africa, South America. . . Besides my home here in Colorado (most beautiful of places!) I have lived for various lengths of time in Brooklyn Heights, Mexico, Belize, The Dominican Republic, and Bolivia. What a beautiful world, filled with beautiful people. Such sights to see!

This is my latest artistic outlet, but I have always been involved in the arts. I grew up working in my family's business painting custom signs by hand, I have been part of a local Rocky Mountain Ballet Company for many years both as dancer and choreographer, I play the Ukulele, I can't get enough of design and photography.

I hope you enjoy my shop and my process.

For my customers from other lands I am fluent in English and Spanish and will be able to converse in Italian.

And lastly, by all means, have a great day!

METALS AND THEIR CARE:

SILVER PLATED: Some components of my jewelry are made from silver plated copper or brass. Silver plated material can at times oxidize just like sterling silver does. In this case it is best to rub lightly with a jewelry cleaning cloth. In time and with frequent wear the layer of silver on the copper can wear off exposing the copper color. If you are ever in need of a more enduring material and would like the heirloom choice of solid silver components this is always available at an extra cost. Please send me a message for current pricing on your selection.

BRASS has a tendency to darken according to the pH of your skin. This more mature color will naturally occur over time. To slow the oxidation process and retain it's original bright gold color for the longest period of time it is best to store all brass in an airtight bag. Also a simple cleaning after each use with a jewelry cleaning cloth will help keep the original tone. If the piece does become tarnished a simple brass tarnish remover (carried at most hardware stores and supermarkets) is an effective method of bringing your piece back to it's original appearance. My favorite method however is immersing the brass in common tomato ketchup for 20-30 minutes. Rinse, pat dry. Care must be taken to avoid brass cleaner getting on any pearls, beads, or gemstones. Your brass pieces may have been given a coating of microcrystalline wax which will help slow the oxidation process. Specific care instructions will be included with these pieces.

PATINA :Please take care with you items that have been given a hand applied patina. Water, oils, acids, and abrasion will alter the patina I have given them. But expect your patina to change naturally with time and acquire maturity and distinction.

ALUMINUM: Aluminum is an extremely soft metal with fascinating properties. It does get harder as I work with it to make your jewelry, however, it remains somewhat flexible. It is best to TAKE CARE NOT TO BEND the metal from the original shape of it's design. Metal that has been severely bent out of shape and then forced back will most likely break. STORAGE: since aluminum is soft it may be prone to scratch. In addition to wearing with some care, it is best to store your aluminum pieces wrapped in tissue in a soft bag when not in use. This ensures the metal will not rub against itself thus potentially marring the metal.

I adore ALUMINUM and wear it myself frequently. I never make ear-wires out of aluminum. Aluminum that comes in frequent direct contact with the skin has been known to cause a skin reaction in a very few number of people. If you believe you are one of these people please purchase one of my items not made with aluminum. Your skin is important to me!

For simplicity's sake customer pays shipping to me and I will pay shipping back to them.
