Although the idea of Origamidekor came to me in 2018, I've been always interested in origami since I was a child.
There was a children's program on TV and one of its parts was a Japanese lady making origami. I used to watch her pleasurably on every episode; however, I remember getting frustrated most of the time because she didn't show the models in detail. I think I was 7 or 8. No origami books in Turkey, no YouTube, and no one interested in origami other than me.
One day, when I was nine, I found a hobby booklet at home. Some newspaper had given it. And inside was the photo tutorial of the traditional origami crane! I found a piece of square paper. Just one. And I folded and folded it until it was almost back to its mold state. But I didn't give up. After hours, I figured out the steps. There it was: my first origami crane.
However, after that I couldn't go a long way in origami. I almost did the same things for years, mostly the origami crane. I remember one day in the university on his lecture, an American lecturer could hardly focus on what he was telling while he was looking at the paper between my fingers to see what will come out. Despite my scarcity of models, I was already known by my family, my friends, and my neighbors as the "origami girl".
My first motivation to try new thing was thanks to a close friend from university. She went to Utrecht as an exchange student on our third year, and she found an English origami book at the Amsterdam book fair (She had to dig the shelves, as she told me). I still keep the book in sight.
Then, there was YouTube. I decided to take origami to a higher level, but I still didn't have the means until YouTube became mainstream and full of origami videos. I was occasionally posting on Instagram some Origami models I'd try. My origami post became more and more frequent. So, on 2018 I decided to start an origami brand.
At first its name was "tugorigami": Tugce + origami. But it was somehow... spiky. I decided to change it after a couple of months. I wanted to focus mainly on home decoration. And Origamidekor was actually born. I posted my first photo on 27 July, 2018, with my adorable cat, Leyla.
Why did I waited for this date? Actually I was planning to post a photo earlier. But just before I did that, I took a cat to my home for the first time. The next day, she got sick and I wasn't sure whether she was going to make it or not. I wanted to post a photo of her with colorful papers; however, if she died, I would be sad to see her photo as the launching news. Luckily, she decided to live.
When I dig deeper into origami, I realized that I loved geometrical shapes, paper flowers, modular origami, kusudamas and tessellations more than animal models. And I'm very much into decorating my home. Throughout my journey I met lucky stars and immediately become addicted to them. And then I learned 3D origami, which was appealing to me even more than the traditional origami. I've always been the type of person who is patient and okay with things including lots of, lots of pieces. I can fold for hours without getting bored, and I am the only folder of the brand at least for now.
This is the story of Origamidekor! I hope you like my listings. Have a nice day!
