Vivo en un pueblo en el oeste rural de Gales, bastante cerca de la costa. No escucho ruidos de tráfico de mi taller de jardín (bueno, tal vez algún que otro tractor). El viento y la lluvia pueden ser un poco ruidosos a veces, pero sobre todo escucho pájaros y ovejas llamando a sus corderos en el campo de al lado.
En mi jardín, veré erizos barajando y fumando al atardecer, escucharé a las ranas salpicar de nuevo en el estanque con el sonido de mis pasos que se acercan, y veré a las abejas recolectando afanosamente el polen de las flores.

Estos son placeres simples y combinados con mi amor por la serigrafía han dado como resultado esta colección de ropa para bebés y niños impresa a mano, y bolsas de tela. Espero que inspire a niños y adultos por igual a maravillarse con el mundo natural que nos rodea y a apreciarlo.

Las prendas y telas en las que imprimo son todas producidas éticamente, en su mayoría orgánicas e impresas con tintas respetuosas con el medio ambiente con una excelente lavabilidad.

Serigrafía con plantillas de corte de papel

Utilizo un método de impresión realmente "de baja tecnología" que involucra una serigrafía de mano, escobilla de goma y plantillas hechas de papel. Hay muchas limitaciones en este proceso, por lo que no se utiliza comercialmente, pero disfruto de la inmediatez que permite necesitar poco equipo y nunca cansarme de las líneas limpias que el papel puede producir. También disfruto el desafío de trabajar alrededor de las limitaciones.

Desarrollo un diseño y lo separo en dos, tres o a veces cuatro colores cuidadosamente elegidos. Al igual que con cualquier serigrafía, se requiere una plantilla diferente para cada color impreso, que corto con un cuchillo de esténcil fino y afilado de un papel de peso medio. Luego coloco una pantalla estirada con una malla de tela fina (originalmente de seda, pero en estos días generalmente poliéster) sobre el papel. La tinta especialmente formulada para la serigrafía se extiende sobre la malla y se presiona con una escobilla de goma. La plantilla de papel se adhiere y está soportada por la pantalla de malla y la tinta se fuerza a través de todos los orificios que se han cortado en el papel. Se pueden hacer muchas impresiones.
Las plantillas posteriores en diferentes colores se introducen en el primer color para construir todo el diseño. Esto puede ser complicado, es un proceso bastante inexacto, pero siempre he encontrado que esto se suma a la naturaleza impresa a mano del artículo (¡a menos que esté demasiado "apagado" y luego se venda como un segundo!) Cada impresión terminada tendrá ligeras variaciones.

Las telas

La serigrafía y el diseño son lo que me encanta hacer, pero lo que imprimo se considera muy cuidadosamente. El algodón es una hermosa fibra natural y dependemos de las partes más pobres del mundo para producirlo para nosotros. Es importante para mí apoyar y promover telas y prendas hechas éticamente. El algodón cultivado orgánicamente, además de ser menos tóxico para que las personas trabajen, tiene la ventaja adicional de ser más amable con el medio ambiente. Las telas que elijo se sienten encantadoras para manejar y trabajar y absorben bien la tinta para soportar una impresión nítida.

Mi objetivo es producir cosas divertidas, prácticas y cómodas que puedas disfrutar usando en tu vida cotidiana. Espero que mis clientes puedan disfrutar usando las piezas que produzco tanto como lo he hecho trabajando con los materiales.

I live in a village in rural west Wales, quite near the coast. I hear no traffic noises from my garden workshop (well maybe the odd tractor). The wind and the rain can be a little noisy at times but mostly I hear birds and the sheep calling to their lambs in the next door field.
In my garden I'll spot hedgehogs shuffling around and snuffling at dusk, hear the frogs splash back in to the pond at the sound of my approaching footsteps, and watch bees busily gathering pollen from the flowers.

These are simple pleasures and combined with my love of screen printing have resulted in this collection of hand-printed baby and children's clothing, and fabric bags. I hope it inspires children and adults alike to marvel at the natural world immediately around us and to cherish it.

The garments and fabrics I print on are all ethically produced, mostly organic and printed with environmentally friendly inks with excellent washability.

Screen printing with paper cut stencils

I use a really ‘low-tech’ method of printing involving a hand held silk screen, rubber squeegee and stencils made from paper. There are many limitations to this process which is why it is not commercially used, but I enjoy the immediacy that needing little equipment allows and never tire of the clean lines that the paper can produce. I also enjoy the challenge of working around the constraints.

I develop a design and separate it out into two, three or sometimes four carefully chosen colours. As with any screen printing a different stencil is required for each colour printed, which I cut with a fine, sharp stencil knife from a medium weight paper. I then place a screen stretched with a fine fabric mesh (originally silk but these days usually polyester) on top of the paper. Ink especially formulated for screen printing is spread on to the mesh and pressed through with a rubber squeegee. The paper stencil adheres to and is supported by the mesh screen and the ink is forced through all the holes that have been cut into the paper. Many prints can then be made.
Subsequent stencils in different colours are then keyed on to the first colour to build up the whole design. This can be tricky, it is a rather inexact process, but I have always found this to add to the hand printed nature of the item (unless it is too ‘off’ and then it gets sold as a second!) Every finished print will have slight variations.

The fabrics

Screen printing and designing are what I love to do but what I print on to is very carefully considered. Cotton is a beautiful natural fibre and we rely on the poorer parts of the world to produce it for us. It is important to me to support and promote ethically made fabric and garments. Organically grown cotton as well as being less toxic for people to work with has the added bonus of being kinder to the environment. The fabrics that I choose feel lovely to handle and work with and absorb the ink well to support a crisp print.

My aim is to produce fun, practical and comfortable things that you can enjoy using in your everyday life. I hope my customers can enjoy using the pieces that I produce as much as I have done working with the materials.
