Before sewing, be sure to pre-wash and care for your fabric the same way you plan to do so after you finish making your garment. Cotton shrinks under heat, and even when washing cold it may shrink during drying or pressing.

Block prints will bleed in the first few washes. Wash them separately at first. Some like to add vinegar to help set the dye, or throw a color catcher in with it.

Do not use bleach or stain removers

Wash in cold water on delicate with mild detergents.

Do not soak

Line dry in the shade or tumble dry on low heat for best results.

Iron from the reverse side of the fabric or with a pressing cloth.

'Indienne' cottons became a sensation the moment they were imported from India to france in the 1600s. They were so popular that they were banned in 1686 to protect local production and commerce. Eventually the prohibition was lifted and local production of block prints began in earnest but the art originated in India so that's where we went!

Our printer is a third-generation family business in Jaipur, India. They have deep roots in their local community— they invest in their workers by paying for children's education, helping with housing, employing women, and even paying for marriages. Unlike larger commercial printers, they use non-carcinogenic AZO-free dyes that are better for their employees health as well as the local environment.

No! Many block prints available on Etsy and elsewhere are printed on a very lightweight cotton voile but our prints use a 45" wide cotton as close in texture, hand, and weight as we could match to historical apparel cotton examples we've had access to! It's a great weight for dressmaking.

As a handmade block print, the lengths we receive are limited by the size of the printers' tables. If you order more than five yards, it will come in multiple pieces.

Shipping Can be expensive!

Thankfully, Etsy's estimates for the real cost of shipping are usually accurate for domestic shipping costs. However, I've found they can be inaccurate for international orders, especially for larger quantities of fabric. If you'd like to place an international order, especially if you're ordering 20 yards of fabric or more, please contact me to set up a custom listing with accurate shipping charges.

We apologize in advance, but we cannot accept orders shipping to Germany due to the challenges and expense of complying with German packaging import laws. We recommend using an international forwarding service of your choice as an alternative.
