Isn't this taking away clothes from people who really need them?

Nope. That's a common misconception both about the purpose of thrift stores and how much they throw out. Literal tons of product is processed every day, often ending up as part of the 12.8 million tons of textile waste that goes to landfills each year.

There is so much product that the stores literally can't put it all out. When they're overloaded, donations get sent straight to the Goodwill Outlets, the salvage stream, or the landfill without ever even making it in the store.
