Pixel Perfect: A Complete Visual Character Dictionary for the Doctor Who Fans
The PixelWho project came about through a desire of the artist to combine his passion for the British science fiction program “Doctor Who” with the 8-bit artistic style of 80’s video games, which also carries a great deal of nostalgia for him. It is an attempt to be the most complete visual catalog of Doctor Who characters ever, in order to celebrate the creativity and dedication of all the artists who have worked on the program over the last 50 years.
The overall goal is to document every character, both significant and incidental, from every Doctors’ respective movie/series runs. Nathan scours episode screen captures and freeze frames DVDs in order to recreate each character accurately and roughly to scale. Every pixel is individually laid by hand; no computer conversion program is used. His art is a true labor of love which requires dedication and time. For example the 10th Doctor poster took 4 months of work to create. The lost episodes of William Hartnell’s (the 1st Doctor’s) era were recreated by referencing production photos, telesnaps, and promotional materials.
Thus far he has created limited edition prints for the 1st (Hartnell), 4th (T. Baker), 8th (McGann), 9th (Eccleston), 10th (Tennant), and 11th (Smith) Doctors.
PixelWho has become a part of the official BBC game, "Doctor Who: Legacy." PixelWho's artwork was used in a new storyline arc called 'Bigger on the Inside.' PixelWho provided and created pixelated characters, gem designs, and backgrounds for the game. The storyline launched in March 2015 and continued through 2017, with the latest chapter having been co-written by George Mann of "Engines of War." The most recent chapter featured original Dalek designs by PixelWho of the Skaro Degradations, as well as original designs of never before seen TARDIS rooms. It has resulted in PixelWho not only being cannon to the extended Doctor Who universe, but also allowed PixelWho to do original designs for a beloved show and fandom.
Nathan is thrilled that his beloved cult science fiction show is now once again the worldwide sensation that it deserves to be, and he has more people to have Whovian discussions with. Both Nathan and Ly have enjoyed finding their niche in the world of science fiction conventions where they were met with great enthusiasm for the artwork and had many interesting conversations with other Whovians. Ly is an avid shopper of Etsy and saw a new opportunity for others to appreciate Nathan’s work. Utilizing her natural business talents, Ly got to work on creating an Etsy shop for Nathan and continues to manage the shop since it's inception.
PixelWho has expanded into other beloved fandoms of Harry Potter, Star Wars, Marvel, and Firefly. Soon to include Star Trek as well. It has been great fun for Nathan to re-imagine all these beloved franchises and give them a new (albeit retro style) twist.

As a fun side fact: The Doctor series posters are also eco-friendly! The printing of each Doctor poster set saves 1/3 of a tree, 133 gallons of water, 100,000 BTUs of energy, 8 pounds of solid waste and 30 pounds of greenhouse gasses. The paper they’re printed on is made with 100% recycled fiber, 60% of which is post-consumer. All processing is chlorine free and the printing plant is run on renewable energy and is offset by carbon credits. All of our smaller prints and items are sent out to local print shops to support "Shopping Small" and "Shop Local."
