When my grandmother could no longer live independently, I moved her from out of state to be closer to me so I could care for her properly. For four years I managed her affairs — selling her car, house, navigating Medicare, securing her spousal military benefits, coordinating her medical care. Then she got sick, and she passed fairly quickly. And then I became her executor.
What I learned is that the paperwork doesn't pause for grief. The calls don't stop. The decisions keep coming. And if you haven't organized things in advance, the people you love face chaos at the worst possible moment.
