I discovered clay at 49!
For years I would take my daughter to our local downtown pottery studio where she would hone her wheel throwing skills. She is absolutely talented! I, while there watching her, would play on my Kindle or do crosswords with absolutely no interest in learning to throw myself. I saw wheel throwing as very daunting, messy and beyond my natural abilities. After a while, a group of ladies starting coming to the pottery studio in the mornings(when we were there) and started hand building. WOW! My eyes were opened!! This I could do. And so it began...my love for hand building and playing with clay. I was 49 years old, hence my aptly named shop Pottery 49. I now have my little work station in our dining room. My dad built me some gorgeous cabinetry and a work surface to store the glazes and tools and everything I need to hand build. My husband got on board doing the technical stuff like buying a kiln, learning to fire in the kiln and the business part of shipping and packing. He is amazing!!
After seeing my husband off to work (our daughter is now in college) you will most likely find me tinkering around with something pottery related. I might be slab rolling clay, building something, glazing or sanding, or taking photos to upload to ETSY. Pottery has brought so much joy to my life, it has made everything richer and more meaningful. I create pottery because I love it and I hope that I never lose sight of why I do what I do...it brings me joy. If others like my quirky little pots and sponge and brush holders and make a purchase, well I just get filled with the giggles and go for days with a big grin because someone out there liked something this small-town, bird watching, pottery making southern lady made!!
