It's so satisfying to finish up a commission so I can pack it up and send it to its new home.
I play with an Etch A Sketch for a living!
My love for Etch A Sketch began when I was around 4. In my youth I'd spend countless hours turning the knobs to create crude, blocky art. Over time my scribbles developed into illustrations that became less and less rudimentary. One day on a whim, I brought an Etch A Sketch into my English class in 8th grade. It was at that moment that I realized: wow, I was the only kid who could confidently draw a cheeseburger, fries and a shake using this simple yet complicated toy.
In high school I began dedicating hours making detailed renditions on an Etch A Sketch. When I was 16, I began using it as a "serious" artistic medium. I moved to Chicago to attend art school and practiced Etch A Sketch outside of the classroom while pursuing a degree in illustration.
After graduating from college I stayed in Chicago and began pursuing a legitimate career in Etch A Sketch. You might be wondering, how can one make a living playing with an Etch A Sketch? Well...I wear a lot of hats! I create custom art and sell original renditions and print products. I teach workshops and etch portraits at events across the US. And every now and then, I get commissioned to create time lapse videos of me creating art.
The tool of my trade has opened doors for me that I would have never thought could have existed. I've had the fortune of being to travel all over the US, Canada, and even to Paris and India. I've received press from the likes of Buzzfeed, DailyMail, Reddit, CNN, The Huffington Post, Britney Spears, and even Pee-Wee Herman (a huge personal victory for me). I've created art for Disney, MTV, Ripley's Believe It or Not!, Callaway, Toys R Us, Cartoon Network and more.
My life feels a bit wacky sometimes, and for that I am truly thankful!

Frequently asked questions
How do you make your art permanent?
My Etch A Sketch art is preserved by disassembling the unit, cleaning the aluminum powder out, and removing the internal components. The powder is what traditionally re-coats the screen when the Etch A Sketch is shaken, so removing the powder means there is nothing left to re-coat the screen. By removing the internal components, the knobs are no longer connected to any internal mechanisms which means you can safely turn them all you want with no concern of creating new lines on the screen.
You can watch a video of my preservation process here:

I've shipped my art all over the world and every piece has made its postal journey intact using this method!
Sizing details
My Etch A Sketch art comes in 1 of 4 sizes - mini, pocket, travel and classic. The dimensions for each size are as follows:
Mini:
Outer frame - 3.75"x3.25" Screen - 2.375"x1.5"
Pocket:
Outer frame - 4.25" x 3.75" Screen - 3"x2.125"
Travel:
Outer frame - 6.125"x5.375" Screen - 4.5"x3.25"
Classic:
Outer frame - 9"x7.375" Screen - 6.25"x4.375"
Prints are available in one of three standard sizes - 5"x7", 8"x10" and 11"x14".
Care instructions
My original Etch A Sketch art has been preserved. When shaken, it will not erase. However, it is not indestructible. It is still important to treat it as you would any work of art. If dropped, light fading is possible.
It is no longer a toy! Keep out of reach of children. If you notice any silver powder on the Etch A Sketch, it can be cleaned with a damp, soapy cloth or sanitary wipe.
Do not store for extended periods of time with the image facing down.
Treat your permanent Etch A Sketch rendition as you would any work of art, it will last a lifetime!
As one final note, some of my older work is preserved using a different method where the knobs are glued down. Please do not forcefully turn them if they are glued!
Custom and personalized orders
Most of my sales here on etsy are custom orders, and I would be happy to work with you! Most commissions are portrait-based, which is how I've established my pricing structure. See the custom art section of my shop for base pricing and details.
If you're interested in going forward with a commission, send me some reference photos and what size you would like to order. The more photos the merrier - I can help to determine which photo would work best for an Etch A Sketch! Photos that fit more horizontally are encouraged. Once I take a look at the photos you provide, I can send you a complimentary mock-up of how the photo would work on an Etch A Sketch, as well as a solid price quote.
I will begin etching once payment is received.
