The Ray Marshall Back Story
My silk screen prints are the latest in a series of artistic direction changes that I’ve made over the years!
My background is in graphic design and paper engineering. Paper engineering is the practice of designing pop-ups for books, greeting cards, etc. Over the years I've designed and had published over 26 interactive books, calendars, and greeting cards.
During the Covid lockdown, whilst working on another still to be published book, I began exploring ways to produce limited edition art prints, something I had always wanted to do. After rejecting lino cutting (too labor intensive), and stenciling (too slow), I found my niche in screen printing.
At that point I was creating designs that were more realistic in approach but I slowly developed a passion for bold abstract shapes, probably because of my graphic design background, and the fact that in paper engineering all the pieces are literally silhouettes before they are printed.
I’m drawn to the bold flat shapes that I can create with silk screen printing but I also like the ability to overprint colors by adding a transparency medium to the inks, something I want to explore deeper. The prints on display are my exploring how creative I can be with different graphic shapes and at some point I’d like to combine my screen prints with my paper engineering and sell those products here.
I pride myself on having built my own humble screens and produced everything on a shoestring budget. I'm excited to see how far I can take this!
This is my venture of dipping my toe into the water of the ‘art world.’
