About Readerboards — The Home of Changeable Signs
Finding information about changeable signs in the UK back in 2017 seemed simple enough — until we tried! After searching high and low without success, we decided to create our own. And so, Readerboards.co.uk was born.
Our system is inspired by the classic American reader boards — those bold, changeable letter signs used across the US to advertise diner specials, hotel rates, and cinema displays. We’ve brought this timeless concept to the UK, offering interchangeable acrylic letters and illuminated light box signage that’s perfect for cafés, bars, and retail displays.
From Inspiration to Innovation
Our founder was astonished that such a simple and effective signage idea had never really caught on in the UK. During the 1970s, while America embraced reader boards, Britain was steering away from “all things American.” Today, we see those influences everywhere — from large American-style fridges to Halloween and even our spelling! We’re proud to add another American classic to that list: Readerboards.
While digital screens dominate today’s advertising, there’s still something charming and authentic about physical, changeable signage — tactile, creative, and refreshingly simple.
Designing the Perfect Letter System
In 2017, our development journey began with creating a font that was bold, legible, and uniform. Inspired by American high-school lettering, the now-iconic Lighthouse Font was born. Using precise silk-screen printing, we achieved a deep, solid black that delivers beautiful contrast when backlit.
Our first two sizes, LPM15 and LPM22, were named for how many letters per metre they fit — giving our customers perfectly balanced light box letters that look professional in every setting.
Quality, Function, and Style
Our changeable letter tiles are printed on durable, clear acrylic and designed for indoor use. When combined with our clear letter tracks, they slide smoothly and sit flush for a clean, professional finish.
We also manufacture bespoke illuminated signs and menu boards in our workshop — allowing customers to order complete, ready-to-install display systems.
