Bremerton, Washington | 106 Sales

Announcement    Paula Gill is an artist/tilemaker with a background in printmaking, watercolor painting and graphic design. Drawing on techniques and skills learned from these disciplines, Paula makes one of a kind tiles by hand using a slab roller and carving tools. Molds are not used. The 3/8" thick tiles have an aesthetic similar to that of woodblock prints: bold simple graphics with playful images inspired by gardens, birds and modern life.

As the terracotta tiles are low fired, they are recommended for decorative use. All tiles come 4 cork pads–for use as a trivit– and fitted with a stout wire loop on the back– for displaying indoors or hanging outside. If displaying outdoors, keep in a dry protected area during freezing conditions.

All designs are original, created by Paula Gill and are copyright protected.

About RedStepStudio

Sales 106
On Etsy since 2007

How Red Step Studio Started

In 1997, I rented a small clay studio in a friend's unheated North Seattle garage in trade for walking her two dogs twice a week. We both thought we were getting the best deal. At the end of a year of wheel throwing dinnerware, slab rolling tiles, hand-building birdbaths and decorative one of kind bowls, I hosted a show in my living room and invited, literally, everyone I knew. I decided that whatever sold the most would be the focus of my new fine crafts business. Needless to say, tiles won! And I have made countless handcarved and painted terracotta and white clay tiles ever since.

For the first 10 years I sold at indoor and outdoor fine arts and crafts, garden, interior design, handmade tile and trade shows up and down the west coast with one foray into the midwest.

I currently sell mostly online through my Etsy shop and my web site www.redstep.com. I am represented by Collective Visions Gallery in Bremerton, Washington and White Bird Gallery in Cannon Beach, Oregon. I still do a few local shows: you can find my current show calendar on www.redstep.com.

I do a lot of custom tile work for customers wanting unique pieces for fireplaces, kitchens and bathrooms. I have been selected to create several large multi-tile pieces for public buildings and 1% for the Arts projects. My largest commission to date was to create 236 unique tiles on the theme "Healing with Nature" for patient rooms in the UC Medical Center in Irvine, California

Shop policies

Last updated on February 7, 2014
All the tiles listed in my shop are handmade by me, Paula Gill. It is a 30 step process and takes up to 6 to 8 weeks to complete. As they are all made one at a time, there may be slight differences from the photos shown here. All tiles come with 4 cork pads on the back side and a stout wire hanger embedded in a recessed area on the back; they hang flat against a wall, or lay flat on a horizontal surface. The clear glaze may develop a fine mesh crackle pattern over time, which gives the surface a lovely patina. The tiles are low fired, which means they are somewhat fragile, as glass is; so handle with care.
