Renaissance Lavender Plant Care Instructions
Lavender is a hardy plant originating in the Mediterranean region. It is a sun-loving plant that needs well-drained, sweet soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. Plant in full sun or a spot that gets at least 6 hrs of sun. When planting your lavender, dig a hole about twice the size of the pot that it’s in. Add well-composted organic matter and mix with native soil. Carefully remove the lavender from the pot by inverting it and squeezing the pot till the plant comes free. Adding lime around the plants will increase the alkalinity of the soil, helping your lavender thrive. Mulching is not recommended since it increases the acidity of the soil and holds moisture. You can mulch with sand or white stone.

If lavender is grown in a container, the temperature will be 15 degrees colder than if it is planted in the ground, therefore, winter protection is needed. It will be best outdoors by burying the pot, covering the pot with burlap, straw or some other protective covering. Locate the potted lavender on the southwestern side of a structure to capture maximum sun and warmth during the coldest months. A location close to a building will allow it to stay warm. A corner is a good spot so that it is protected from winter winds. Lavender does not do well as an indoor plant since it can rarely get the sun that it needs. If you do not have a protected spot and need to bring it in during the winter, locate it in a sunny, warm window. You may take it outdoors on sunny days with balmy temperatures. By the time spring arrives, it should green up and begin to grow.

Pruning your plant in the fall or spring will prevent it from becoming “leggy”, improve the appearance and ensure better bloom. Trim 1/3 of the plant and shape the plant. Water your young plant occasionally until it’s established. Then it should be fine on its own. Overwatering will kill lavender. Good observation will tell you what your plant needs.
