How a "that'll do" market lamp started Retro Steel Co.
A few years back, I was walking around a local craft market and spotted someone selling handmade industrial lamps. One was literally just a basic galvanised adaptable box with a lamp-holder stuck on top. As a career industrial electrician with over 30 years in the trade, my first thought was: "I can do that a hell of a lot better—and a hell of a lot safer."
I didn't want to make cheap DIY gimmicks or glue together random upcycled junk. I wanted to use my trade experience to build proper, heavy-duty architectural lighting using the exact same rugged, solid 20mm British steel conduit I’ve spent my life installing on heavy industrial sites.
So, I went into my workshop and got to work.
Today, every single lamp at Retro Steel Co is individually built to order right here in South Yorkshire. I precision-cut, manually deburr, and hand-thread every single length of steel myself. Because of my professional background, safety isn't an afterthought—it's engineered into the design. While budget imports use thin-walled plastic or ungrounded kits, my fixtures have a serious physical weight and are hand-wired with flawless earth continuity, fully insulated internal pathways to protect the cable, and are rigorously safety tested by me before they ever leave my bench. Every lamp has a unique serial number and is fully traceable.
The Workshop to Your Desk Experience
Because I build these to a premium engineering standard, I don't just chuck them into a generic box covered in manufacturing grease. Every lamp is meticulously cleaned, hand-wrapped in signature protective paper, and finished with traditional craftsman's twine. I also include a dedicated, hand-signed Safety & Conformity card printed on premium textured Kraft stock, so you know exactly who built and tested your light.
When you buy a lamp from me, you’re not just getting a piece of home decor; you’re getting a piece of proper, heritage-inspired British engineering built by a qualified sparky who refuses to cut corners. No nonsense, no mass-production—just honest craftsmanship and absolute peace of mind for your workspace.
Cheers,
Andrew
