I'm Brad, the designer and historian behind Ringaboy -- Pittsburgh-based, officially licensed, and specializing in hyperlocal historical designs from the Conrail, Norfolk Southern, CSX, Rock Island, WATCO, Lionel, and Union Pacific and other railroad families.
I've been making railroad t-shirts since Day 1 of Ringaboy. I vowed to not simply make "logo slap" tees, but instead the kind of shirts that go deeper than the herald on the side of a boxcar, caboose or locomotive. Every Ringaboy design is built around specific historical research: a yard, a shop, a division, a depot, a slogan that real railfans recognize but have never been able to wear. The Juniata Shops in Altoona. Hulsey Yard in Atlanta. The Monon's Lafayette yard in Indiana. The kind of operational detail that lives in railroad memory but rarely makes it onto apparel.
The research matters because the audience knows. Railfans are not casual consumers. They know which railroad served their town, which yard their grandfather worked, which merger erased the line they grew up watching. A shirt that gets the history right means something entirely different to that person than one that just gets the logo right.
Producing that work accurately takes more than design skill. Ringaboy holds formal written licensing agreements, giving us the authority to reproduce these marks correctly and the responsibility to do so with historical integrity and aesthetic taste.
The designs themselves are produced using specialized digital aging filters that replicate the look of old plastisol heat press and screen printing techniques -- the way a real railroad shirt from the era would have actually aged. Not generic distressing. Period-accurate fading built from the ground up in Adobe Illustrator, usually with a hot coffee nearby and late 50s, early 60s jazz on the playlist.
Everything is printed on demand in the United States using eco-friendly direct-to-garment technology. Every design is proofed carefully before it goes live, because the person buying a Chessie System Pittsburgh Division shirt deserves to know that someone who cares about that history made it.
